The M1059 was based on the M113A2 APC, and carried an M157 smoke generating set in the passenger compartment. A 120gal (450L) fog oil tank was stored inside the vehicle, and an M54 smoke generator was mounted on either side of the vehicle roof and enclosed by a boxlike armor shield. The generators vaporized the fog oil with heat produced from a pulse jet engine, and then the oil condensed once it was dispensed, forming a large white cloud. The smoke generating set was powered by 10 gallons (40L) of gasoline stored in two cans on the rear of the vehicle, allowing around 1 hour and 40 minutes of continual operation. The fog oil capacity was enough to last up to 2 hours of operation.

M1059A3 used the RISE powerpack and other improvements of the M113A3. Another change was the use of the M157A2 smoke generator set, which allowed different fuels to be used for smoke generation, including diesel.
