The 4x4 or 4x2 M1117 was built for US military police use. A door with integral vision block and firing port was provided in each side of the vehicle, and a clamshell door was installed in the right rear corner in a similar layout to the M706. Also like the earlier vehicle, there were roof hatches over the driver's seats, an engine access hatch was installed on the rear of the left side of the vehicle, and a Braden 15,000lb (6,800kg) winch was provided in the right bow. The driver controlled a central tire inflation system with preset values for travel on highways (4.9bar [71psi]); cross-country (3.1bar [45psi]); mud, sand, and snow (1.6bar [23psi]); and for emergencies (1.2bar [17psi]). The system would also automatically compensate for a tire air leak, and the tires themselves featured runflat inserts that allowed movement at speeds of up to 48kph (30mph) for 40km (25mi). The weapon station was the Cadillac Gage Upgunned Weapon Station, shared with the AAVP7A1, and a bank of four M257 smoke grenade launchers was mounted on each rear corner on the turret. In addition, a 500,000-candlepower spotlight was mounted above and elevated with the machine gun. A pintle mount capable of accepting an M249 squad automatic weapon was positioned outboard of the machine gun on the turret's right side. A V-shaped hull helped protect the vehicle against mine blasts. M1117 was protected against overhead attack from a 155mm shell from 15m (49'), its wheels could withstand a mine filled with 12lb (5.4kg) of TNT, and the vehicle could survive 4lb (2kg) of TNT anywhere. Modular Expandable Armor System 2C (MEXAS 2C) applique ceramic composite armor and spall liners could be fitted that made the vehicle proof against .50cal AP at 250m (820'). The M1117 could carry more passengers after interior modifications. The US Army had accepted over 2,777 vehicles by April 2011.
